MAIN CHARACTERISTICS
Quite common in the Atlantic, the Channel and the North Sea, lavers are red algae found in different locations according species: P. linearis and ombilicalis are present from Norway to Morocco, while P. leucosticta is more Meridional. Their very thin blades ondulate in the water and flatten themselves on the substratum at low tide. With an aspect which often goes from purplish to dark brown when they are under water, they turn nearly black when they dry on the beach

WORTH NOTING
The various species are difficult to distinguish. P. linearis colonizes the upper part of the foreshore at the end of winter but P.umbilicalis develops on the lower down.
